IMPORTANT
INFORMATION FOR PRIMARY CARE PROVIDERS
Download
the menu of MassHealth approved behavioral health screening tools, and a
description of who should administer the tool and the appropriate age group.
PCPs can now download the latest MassHealth-approved primary care screening toolkits.
As of December 2007, Plan-contracted primary care
providers (to include physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners,
nurse midwives, and registered nurses) are required to use one of eight
standardized behavioral health screening tools at well-child visits with
children under the age of 21.
Access free Web-based curriculum to learn how to use the
MassHealth-approved behavioral-health screening tools for children under the
age of 21 in the primary care setting.
After completing the curriculum, the participant will:
-
understand the new mandate and what it requires of MassHealth primary care
providers;
-
be familiar with the evidence supporting the use of standardized behavioral
health screening tools;
-
understand how to choose from the menu of approved screening tools and use the
tools;
-
understand when to make referrals to a behavioral health provider;
-
be familiar with strategies to incorporate the use of standardized screening
tools into routine office procedures.
Note: If a provider discovers a condition
that requires further assessment, diagnosis, or treatment during periodic or
interperiodic visits, the provider must either deliver the needed follow-up
service or refer the member to a behavioral health (BH) provider. In addition,
the provider must tell the member and/or member’s guardian how to access
services. Providers can call the Plan's Behavioral Health Provider Line at
1-866-444-5155 to speak to a BH specialist or clinician that can
give you information on BH providers in the member’s area. See the links below
for regional lists of BH providers.
